More than 2 centuries ago, Cartagena proclaimed itself the first city to SHOUT FREEDOM, thanks to the men and women, Black people, mulattos, and maroons who, through their struggle, resistance, and resilience, managed to break free from Spanish rule. Important figures like Benkos Biohó, founder of San Basilio de Palenque, the first free town for enslaved Africans in the Americas. Another important figure was Pedro Romero, an Afro-Cartagenian artisan who, together with his “lanceros”—free men—fought for independence. We owe it all to them.
